A relatively new musician to the South African music scene, Camagu's smooth, voice quality mixes beautifully with the electronic sounds and drums. His style is very modern and rhythmic.
There seems to be an endless steady stream of talent leaving the Eastern Cape and making their way to Johannesburg to make their fame and fortune. Camagu Siyabulela Mabuya is another rising star among the likes of Ringo, Mxo and Simphiwe Dana to mention a few.
Who is Camagu?
Camagu was born in Queenstown but moved to Umtata and then to Durban after that up to Joburg back to the Eastern Cape and the whole round all over again. He has lived at different towns moved all over the Country but his heart still lies in Queenstown, which is the only place he has really ever called home.
This was all done for the love of the music, which plays a central role in his life
His Influences:
Music was always in his blood as his father used to play drums and sing in a Jazz Band. His influences include Stevie Wonder, Miriam Makeba, Michael Jackson, Donny Hathaway, Ringo, Brenda Fassie, Ella Fitzgerald, Musiq Soul Child, D’ Angelo, Tracy Chapman, Bob Marley, Lauryn Hill, Nat King Cole, Tracy Chapman, Kamazu to mention a few. His Music reminds you of all the great Soul Vocalists of our time and yet he still has the Vocal Soul strength to remind you that the Music is about him and his Journey.
Musical history
The Versatile Camagu studied Jazz at the Natal Technikon in Durban for 3 yrs, which is also where he recorded his first Demos. He was there along with Shana, Swazi Dlamini, and Xoliswa Ggqoli but then in keeping with his nomadic nature he moved up to Johannesburg and stayed with his cousin who had a home studio where they used to record songs, which they were hoping to use to get a recording deal with Top Shayela, Thando Soga and Fikile Luswazi. When things did not turn the way he would have liked them to he went back to the Eastern Cape and helped his Cousin Run a Business for a few years. After getting himself back on his feet again he moved to Durban where he worked with Shana and they recorded a song together with Gabi Le roux and they also featured General from Chiskop on their EP UNGENWE YINI?
